What is the general vibe of the city when walking to the convention from one of the outer hotels? You always want to have your wits about you, but the area, and the few blocks surrounding it, is quite popular during the day. Lots of people walking around. There are quite a few restaurants and outdoor sitting areas.

Having been to this Lancaster location ever since Zenkaikon started having it here, I can tell you that the locals are always very curious. I don't go in cosplay, but I see the looks other people generally get. Most people just glance in passing, so I wouldn't worry about someone coming after you for being in costume. This also depends on what you are going as. You might get a comment or two if you dress up as a devil or something considered publicly shocking.
But hey, it's a calculated risk when you put yourself out there like that. Like the above person said, you should always be on guard, regardless of whether you're in costume or not. Beyond that, I wouldn't really worry too much. Downtown Lancaster is actually a pretty nice area. As a general rule, use a buddy system and you should be fine.

As a local business owner, with my photo studio diagonal from the convention center, I can safely say that striderzero is correct. Most locals are just curious. You'll find that Lancaster has more of a small town feel, despite the fact that its expanding, and the melting pot of culture is growing. The likelihood of you being in any danger is pretty slim, but there is always the possibility that someone will say something antagonistic. The downtown area is really an awesome place though. It comes alive on tuesdays, fridays and saturdays because central market (the nations oldest farmers market) is open. Of course, conventions bring life and activity to the area as well. We host First Fridays, where the first friday of each month the city is full of activity and people visiting restaurants, art galleries, etc. If you'd like more info, I'd be happy to chat with you. I am available via email or through my website ( I even have a neat little chat feature on there for easy and direct conversation). See you in 2019! info@richardwaine.com richardwaine.com
